They later used the temple as the head temple of the Seon sect during the Joseon Dynasty, a time when Buddhism was suppressed in Korea.
In the years that followed, Bongeunsa temple became a steppingstone for the revival of Korean Buddhism, producing many great masters.
A 28-meter stone statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha, survived both fires and the war.
